On August 4th my parents and I took a day trip to Bremond to visit Busia, Dza Dza and Uncle Paul in honor of Busia & Dza Dza's 35th wedding anniversary. We were having a great time and drying off after spending some time in the pool when Uncle Paul heard some talk on the fire radio about a big fire south of town. At the time Daddy was changing my diaper but Uncle Paul ran in to get his gear and then the fire truck picked him up in front of the house and off he road. Of course the rest of us continued to listen to the radio to hear what was happening and see how big the fire was. After about 10 minutes the man in charge of the scene began calling for rehab equipment (the heat index was a mere 103 degrees) as well as more personnel. At that point Daddy was putting me down for a nap so he and Mommy decided it would be ok for him to go and check it out. Mommy and Daddy decided to grab some bottled water from the fire station, along with some that Busia had, and take it out to the sight where Daddy could assess the situation and see if there was anything he could do. The following are pictures from the trip Mommy took to drop Daddy off - he's a firefighter through and through!
After Mommy dropped Daddy off and ran to Busia's to get something for Uncle Paul, everyone decided to go and see if the boys (Uncle Paul and Daddy) were ready to come home yet. After fighting fire for three and a half hours we caught up with my Daddy - hot, sweaty and dirty he's still handsome don't you think??
While we waited for Daddy to convince Uncle Paul it was time to come home Mommy snapped some more pictures of me! We are actually on the road that ran through the center of the fire and there were planes and helicopters dropping water and fire retardant on either side of us! It was really exciting and super loud... lucky Busia and Mommy were with me to explain what was going on, otherwise I might have been scared.
Here is one of the helicopters that was dropping water - it was HUGE! It flew right over the top of us and actually made the truck shake... thats how close it was! The thing that looks like a rope hanging from the bottom of the helicopter is what it was using to suck up water out of the tanks and ponds that were in the area. This helicopter worked really hard, it was dropping water every ten minutes or so - it was insane how quickly it refilled and returned with its load!
I got tired of sitting in my car seat waiting for Daddy to finish up so Busia helped me look out the window. It was neat because got I to see the helicopters, fire trucks and fire fighters and even a reporter up close and personal. You always see the water and fire retardent drops on TV but I've seen them up close!
Around 630pm we loaded Daddy and Uncle Paul into the back of the pickup and headed back to Busia & Dza Dza's house for dinner. We didn't end up having the quiet dinner at the Coalmine like we planned but while the boys cooled off in the pool Dza Dza went and got our dinners and brought them home. We had a great anniversary dinner with all of the important parts - Busia, Dza Dza, Uncle Paul, Mommy, Daddy and Me!
So this is the story of my first fire... any guesses about who in the family this comes from??
Peace, love and fire,
Bailey
